Understanding Connecticut Crimes and Violations

In Connecticut, crimes are classified as felonies and misdemeanors. Misdemeanors are punishable by fines, up to one year in jail, or both.

Misdemeanors range from Class A to Class D and unclassified. Class A misdemeanors can lead to up to one year in jail, while Class B and C misdemeanors can lead to six to three months in jail.

Class D misdemeanors can lead to thirty days in jail. If a misdemeanor is categorized as unclassified, the penalty will be determined in the statute that defines the offense.

Felonies crimes are more serious than misdemeanors and are punishable by more than one year in jail, fines or both. Connecticut felonies range from Class A to Class E, with Class A felonies  being the most serious with imprisonment from ten to twenty-five years.

Class B and Class C felonies can lead to one year imprisonment to ten-to-twenty years imprisonment. Class D and E felonies can lead to no jail time, but up to 5 years of prison time for Class D felonies and 3 years of imprisonment for Class E felonies.
